Restoring Human Connection in a Digital World***

We have a design conflict.

Humans are designed to connect for survival, and ultimately, to thrive.

Technology, particularly social technology, is designed to keep you engaged with your full attention on the screen. As a result, you cannot pay attention to or connect with anyone around you.

This is most evident with children. The handheld digital device has become the modern-day pacifier. It keeps a child’s full attention for as long as we want. It also creates a barrier to their ability to see, observe, or interact with anything and anyone outside of the screen—in other words, the real world and real people.

However, adults are not immune to this same magnetic pull of our digital devices and social technology. Using technology can be a huge advantage for our personal efficiency, but we must tame our technology use so that it does not become a disadvantage to our human effectiveness.

It’s the indiscriminate use of our devices that creates the barrier to human connection. So, the next time you are in line, go offline to connect with the person two feet away from you.

We must disconnect to reconnect!

Stay connected to us for practical actions to restore human connection in a digital world.
