There are four levels of awareness that inspiring coaches develop to build a positive coaching mindset.

One level of awareness is to know your emotions.

Here are a few tips from The Power of Positive Coaching:

  1. Keep a private journal to help you know and manage your emotions.
  2. Demonstrate empathy to more effectively navigate challenging coaching discussions.
  3. Respond (versus react) to situations by checking your emotions first so you can make the best decisions for your team.
  4. Master your emotions with the 5 × 5 Rule: If it won’t matter in five years don’t spend more than five minutes being upset by it.
